Home School Program

The CFA Home School fencing program was created to introduce the sport to the HS community and offer access to a sport that develops strength, speed and agility while reinforcing discipline, respect and sportsmanship.  Our fencing programs offer an activity that has a team feel while being an “individual” sport, and often appeals to the athletes that are not “team sports” players.  As fencing is almost as much a mental game as a physical one (it is often referred to as Physical Chess) it is also a great fit for the athlete that prefers a “brains over brawn” approach to exercise.  Fencing is also a wonderfully empowering sport for young women as the lack of dependence on pure strength and speed allow them to compete and succeed in direct physical contests with all comers.

Athletes have the chance to fence as a team with the Virginia School Fencing League as a team in tourneys, or as CFA members in USFA competition.  Our HS Group that was started last year will continue to meet on Wednesdays at 3:30pm-5:30pm.  We will also be offering a new Introductory fencing course for Home Schoolers.  For more information or to reserve your spot in that beginner’s class please contact a CFA member today.

The Home School program currently has three levels of participation. The beginners program is designed for those who are new to the sport. The basics of fencing footwork, bladework, tactics and strategy are covered in this 8 week class. Over the course of the beginner’s class, students become proficient in the movement and actions of fencing, and start to strengthen the legs and upper body with targeted exercise. This also provides both cardiovascular and anaerobic exercise. By the end of the course the student will be able to fence safely and will be ready for more intermediate level lessons. After this class the fencer moves to the intermediate level of classes. All the needed gear is provided for this class. We have had several requests in this class from parents who would like to participate as well, and as such this fall will be an all ages class.

After fencers have completed the beginners class they move to our Monday afternoon beginners class. In this class the student begins to learn more advanced moves, the level of conditioning increases and students begin to learn about modern sport fencing and the rules governing competition both on the National Circuit as well as the rules for the Central Virginia Youth Fencing League (CVYFL), which students will be able to participate in should they chose to do so.

The Advanced class, meeting on Wednesday afternoons, is for fencers who have been competing in the CVYFL or the USFA and want to focus on developing their talents as competitive sport fencers. Athletes at this level have usually been fencing for over a year. Most all fencers at this level are active in at least local USA Fencing competitions as well as the school leagues, but competitive participation is optional. At this point we do ask that students have at least their beginning set of gear.
